MANY RIVERS TO CROSS: DIASPORA STORIES

In honor of SQFF’s 25th year, we are centering voices still at the margins of the screen. QTBIPOC community members and allies gathered virtually to assemble an amazing array of films from America and across the world. From our feature film, FORGOTTEN ROADS, in which a middle-aged Chilean woman who thought she’d never find love rediscovers herself, to ALICE JÚNIOR, in which a young trans woman navigates transphobia, love, and the deeper meaning of community, these human stories will engage audiences with humor, resistance, and tenderness. This year we are also offering a live event in collaboration with Lesbian Love Lab: The Dating Game will hilariously explore love in the time of COVID. Enjoy the shows!

THE DATING GAME - LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID

Online dating—ugh! Some hate it; others find it easy. Either way, it’s unavoidable. This special live event begins with a hilarious short GOT GAME that reminds us of how we used to date face to face, followed by a clip of an online Black lesbian dating game (aptly called The Dating Game). Before we watch a live version of it, we’ll also chat with game host Dujuana Sharese and creator Zamara Perri of Black Lesbian Love Lab.

FORGOTTEN ROADS - THE WAY WE (MOVE)

Suggested viewing time: October 17 @ 6:30 PM

“The Way We (Move)”: It must be the way we move forward with our hearts, knowing that the drama, arguments, doubts, hand-holding, and kisses of truth are the reasons. These films all show how the heart speaks.

Live Q&A with : 10/18 @ 3:00 PM PDT

Phillip Pike; 2019; USA; 102 min.

This untold history of Toronto’s Black queer community spans four decades of passionate activist rebellion. Refusing to be silenced and raging with love, the trailblazers featured in this documentary demanded a city where all can live their truths free from the threat of violence.

WALK MANY WORLDS: SHORTS PROGRAM

Suggested watch time: October 23 @ 5:00 PM PDT

This series of short films focus on women making critical decisions or holding firm to the paths they have chosen. With hilarity and sensitivity, fierceness and vulnerability, they serve as witnesses to the most central moments of our lives. Do we meet violence with violence? Do we let “them” win? How do we find paths to a stronger self?

ALICE JUNIOR

Prefilm Conversation and Poetry Reading: October 24 @ 3:00 PM PDT

Suggested watch time: October 24 @ 3:45 PM PDT

This coming-of-age romantic comedy focuses on trans resilience, chosen family, and unapologetic truths. Longtime YouTube star and blogger Anna Celestino Mota is a perfect fit in the title role. In Brazil’s ultraconservative political context, Baroni and Mota’s collaboration is a powerful act of resistance.
