THE PEOPLE'S JOKER
Vera Drew; 2022; USA; 92 minutes

Few films have experienced the ups and downs of Vera Drew’s THE PEOPLE’S JOKER. After premiering at TIFF 2022, subsequent screenings were instantly canceled due to rights issues, and the film has remained in limbo ever since, until its recent U.S. premiere at Outfest in Los Angeles. This wild and witty superhero send-up follows an aspiring clown grappling with her gender identity while also facing a fascistic caped crusader. Vera Drew’s film takes familiar material and turns it into something raw, innovative, and dangerous. Yes, it’s hilarious. But it’s also smarter than you might expect, providing nonbinary audiences a chance to see their journeys carried out in the context of a mainstream cinematic genre.
