SOFT
Joseph Amenta; 2022; Canada; 87-minutes

Soft provides an organic look into a tumultuous preteen experience. It starts out as a fantastical and free-spirited journey of 3 queer best friends, destined to take over the summer. However, their plans of detached adventure quickly go awry as they become enthused by Toronto nightlife, and a quick turn of events leads to the caregiver of one of the tweens to go missing. As a coming-of-age film, Soft reminds us that while youth is glowing, beautiful and curious, no one of any age is exempt from confronting the woes family dynamics, friendship, security, identity and morality. Soft is funny, stimulating and layered; a great watch.

I IDENTIFY AS ME
Tina Colleen & Monick Monell; 2021; USA; 10 min.

"I Identify as Me" is a character-based, experimental short film that highlights Trans, gender-diverse people, and masculine-presenting women who are Black and Brown. Each character’s intersectional experiences connect us with common themes of their gender expressions outside of social norms, self-exploration, and affirming their true selves. Characters shed light on the reality of violence that can be inflicted due to someone’s race, gender, and sexuality. Despite these systematic and social challenges, the characters reaffirm that acceptance and self-love are the paths forward.
