A message from our Festival Director (Trent) Farrington:

Hey Seattle!

I’m thrilled to kick off this year’s celebration of queer cinema with this extraordinary city.

This year’s theme, Q-thartic, is about feeling, healing, and everything in between that comes with our community. With over 80 films in our lineup, we’re ready to take you on an emotional journey. These stories offer a much-needed release, arriving at a time when the world feels heavier than it should. SQFF '24 champions intersectionality, showcasing queer narratives that reflect the many layers of our identities: race, gender, social class, and more.

First, a gigantic thank you to all the filmmakers who submitted their work. Your dedication to bringing vibrant, authentic, and queer stories to life means everything to this industry—especially now. An extra special shoutout to our local filmmakers—you’re the heart and soul of this year's program. Your work brings Seattle’s queer community to life on the big screen, and I couldn’t be more gagged, gooped, or grateful.

If you haven't heard this year, we’re doing things a little differently. We will be hosting a 4-day in-person festival from October 10-13, followed by a virtual experience to keep the energy going from home as I'm sure you're yearning for more queer films in your at-home catalogs. This change from our usual 10-day format is about making the festival more sustainable and accessible for everyone. Invite a friend and remind folx, that SQFF  has multiple ways to access our Q-thartic showcase. Virtual catalogs will be available and geo-blocked to the PNW (WA, OR, ID, and AK)!

I also want to thank the incredible folks on the Three Dollar Bill Cinema Board for trusting me with this year’s program—it's a responsibility I can’t take lightly. As a curator from a tiny island in the USVI, I bring an insatiable appetite for independent, under-represented, and emerging artists both in front of and behind the camera. My practice centers on exploring and expanding the LGBTQ+ experience in all its glory. It’s a massive task, and I’m deeply honored by their belief in my leadership.

Lastly, to our members, donors, ticketholders, staff, sponsors, and volunteers—thank you, thank you, thank you! Your support is the fire of SQFF. At a time when we’re fighting harder than ever just to be, your dedication amplifies our mission at Three Dollar Bill Cinema. We can’t wait to share these films and conversations with you. Let’s come together, celebrate, and experience a bold new kind of catharsis that only queer stories can explore, something Q-thartic.

I better see y'all at the movies!
