Mexico | 2019 | 61 minutes | Genevieve Roudané | in Spanish with English subtitles

In the small Mexican town of Chiapa de Corzo, two rival gender-bending dance groups prepare for the annual Fiesta Grande, a vibrant party where men transform into women and become what’s known as the Chuntá. There are traditionalists, who believe that only perceived heterosexual men should wear the gowns and makeup, while other dancers welcome people of all identities, especially those who face violence for being queer. By examining a changing tradition and through testimonials and colorful dance moves, THE CHUNTÁ highlights a much larger conversation about homophobia and machismo in Mexico.

This film is fully subtitled (deaf-friendly).
