FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2019 | 8:30 PM | GAY CITY: SEATTLE’S LGBTQ CENTER

Austria | 2017 | 104 minutes | Monja Art | In German and French with English subtitles

In SEVENTEEN, writer-director Monja Art explores the boundaries of adolescence and adulthood at a rural Austrian high school overflowing with the bubbling turmoil of sex, jealousy, and loneliness inherent in lives measured on social media. Paula (Elisabeth Wabitsch) tangles with bullies and boyfriends, and wrestles with conflicting crushes on classmates Lilli and Charlotte, all while caring for her ailing father. In eloquently paced scenes of awkward, genuine humor and loathsome, hormonal behavior, the fickle nature of teenage romance collides with fantasy and paranoia as these young people negotiate this new landscape.

This film is deaf-friendly.
