In this fascinating and transporting documentary, Sven Marquardt, best known as a heavily tattooed and pierced queer bouncer at Berlin’s most famous and debaucherous techno club but also an accomplished photographer and sensitive soul, reunites with Dominique Hollenstein and Robert Paris, two old friends from the colorful East Berlin underground of the 1980s. Marquardt reflects on his career in preparation for a new photo shoot and gallery showing that he is undertaking with his long-time model/muse Dominique. Through archival images of the queer punk scene in East Berlin and others of the modern-day city taken by both Marquardt and Paris (a photographer in his own right), the three discuss their experiences of art and life before the Wall came down, when they considered themselves as free as birds—though they couldn’t leave the country.
This film is deaf-friendly.
