The Complete 2003 Festival Schedule
When they ordained Anita C. Hill as their reverend, the congregation of the St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church committed “Ecclesiastical Disobedience.” The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) bans non-celibate lesbians and gays from serving in the ministry. THIS OBEDIENCE follows Reverend Hill and her struggle for the full inclusion of GLBT people in the Lutheran church. By asserting that her committed relationship is as much a part of herself as the church is, Hill challenges the ELCA on one of the most divisive issues facing the Christian church today. The story includes staunch traditionalists opposed to any change in the ban, young people struggling with how they fit into the church, and a surprising change of heart by the former presiding bishop of the ELCA. Hill’s timely story puts a human face on the debate being waged in religious communities across the country.
