| Heartbreaking and uplifting, Gil M. Portes’ MARKOVA: COMFORT GAY brings to light a long hidden chapter in gay history. Living in the obscurity of a "home for golden gays" in the Philippines, Walter Dempster Jr., once the glamorous performer Markova, is haunted by a tragic personal and national past. No longer able to hide behind silence, he decides to come out to a reporter as a "comfort gay"-a gay man forced into degrading sexual slavery by the occupying Japanese army. Growing up in repressive 1930s Manila, Markova’s young life was also shaped by the brutality of a despotic brother. Marked by his experiences of violence and humiliation, but never succumbing, Markova ultimately achieved a personal liberation and dignity that is uniquely his, but is also emblematic of the struggles of a nation and a people. MARKOVA is a life-affirming cause for celebration in all our communities. MARKOVA: COMFORT GAY; Gil M. Portes, director; 2000; Philippines; 97 minutes; 35mm (in English and Tagalog with English subtitles) Welcome
