| When three college friends from Ljubljana, Slovenia decide to spend their summer break in the woods canoeing down the River Kolpa (separating Slovenia from Croatia), they find themselves pushing up against various boundaries: the borders between countries; the clash between urban values and rural attitudes; the physical challenges of the great outdoors and the tension between what’s permissible and what’s forbidden. As Zana and Alja become more physically intimate, straight-laced Simona becomes obsessed with one of the characters they encounter, a conservative avenger who calls himself the Guardian of the Frontier. When nationalist and personal passions lead to an explosive climax, it’s THELMA AND LOUISE meets THE RIVER WILD meets THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER, the first Slovenian feature film directed by a woman, succeeds not only as a multi-dimensional political and social drama, but as a red-hot grrrl-power thriller as well. GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER (VARUH MEJE); Maja Weiss, director; 2001; Slovenia; 100 minutes; 35mm (in Slovenian with English subtitles) ASL
